The significance of uniting different social classes in non-violent protests: A comparative analysis of the 1989 Tian’anmen square protest and the 2011 Egyptian revolution

The 1989 Tian’anmen Square Protest and the 2011 Egyptian Revolution are two of most influential non-violent protests at junction 20th century 21st century. Although they share many similarities, movements reached completely different results: was harshly repressed by Chinese government, whereas successfully overthrew authoritarian Mubarak government. existing research has attributed destinies revolutionary to government control over military, this paper focuses instead on implications protestors’ social classes. method employed is a qualitative comparative analysis these events based literature primary sources. Two objectives were formulated for study: examine how class composition protest influenced development process revolutions provide insights future revolutionaries avoid failure due lack diversity in classes among protesters.
